Dear Governor Huckabee,
My name is Scott J. Mahurin. I am 30 years old and I live in St. Petersburg, FL with my wife and two children. We are expecting our third child in February, just a few days after the Florida Primary! I teach Latin and Rhetoric at The Paideia School of Tampa Bay, a classical and Christian school. I have been a born again, evangelical Christian for 15 years.
Throughout my life, I have always been interested in politics. I was raised in the 1980s, the peak of American strength under the great Ronald Reagan. My senior year of high school, 1994, saw the return of the Congress to Republican rule. I worked for local and national candidates in Idaho, including one who has been in a lot of trouble recently. In college, I was chairman of the College Republicans at the University of Idaho. But the debacle of the Gingrich Congress, the Clinton impeachment, and a general cynicism set in around 1998. I voted for the Constitution Party candidates in 2000 and 2004 in Presidential elections, and in the 2006 mid term elections, I did not even vote. I still cared about the issues, but as a conservative I felt I had no voice.
There were so many issues that seemed to demand attention, from gay marriage to Iraq to education, that I could not process them all.
It was like political autism.
I was aware of all the issues, but I could not process the most important ones. I had no filter, so I just retreated to the sidelines.
However, this Mother’s Day, all of that changed.
You see, my pastor, Jerry Cisar, preached a sermon on the evil of abortion. My heart was stirred yet again about this essential issue for a civilized nation. And, I realized that my cynicism (masked as idealism) was actually helping the other side. After all, my vote in 2004 almost helped John Kerry win Florida, and subsequently, the Presidency. John Kerry most likely would not have appointed Alito and Roberts would he? We would not have the partial birth abortion ban upheld under a Kerry-influenced Supreme Court.
In the sermon, my heart was provoked to activism yet again. Abortion is the most important issue in this campaign. Our nation needs someone with consistent pro life credentials and beliefs to appoint judges who will support life and will sign legislation that errs on the side of life in all cases.
Governor, I have been observing your campaign now for several months, and I believe that you are the best candidate running. I have read your weight loss book and have even begun some of the “stops” that you have recommended. I commend you for your humility and example in this area as well.
Please accept this gift of $20 towards your campaign. I have a blog at http//scottjmahurin.townhall.com that is about abortion, and about your campaign. It is called Tampa Bay Pro Life for Mike Huckabee
.
I am ready to help you in any way I can. Many in our church have been impressed with your campaign. Word is getting out in Florida. The polls are irrelevant at this point. You are going to win Florida and I want to help you in any way I can. I have worked on campaigns before.
I pray for you every day, sir. Please let me know how else I may be of help.
Sincerely,
Scott J. Mahurin
