So, why another blog?

Blogs are all the rage.

Everybody's got one.

Why do we need another?

Why do I need to create one?

First, allow me to introduce myself. I am Scott Mahurin. I am 30 years old. I live in a small house in St. Petersburg, FL.  I have been a Christian for almost 15 years. I have a beautiful and godly wife, Jennifer. We have been married for seven years. I have two beautiful daughters, Tessa Kate (age 4) and Bethany Emme (age 2). I have another child who is due to enter this world in February 2008.  We are members of Gulf Coast Community Church in St. Petersburg. I have been a teacher for nine years in classical Christian schools. I teach Latin and Rhetoric at the Paideia School of Tampa Bay.

So, that's me. Not too exciting in the grand scheme.

I am creating this blog out of a need for activism. Not an activism for any certain party or candidate. Not an activism devoid of the belief in God's ultimate sovereign sway over the events of the world. But an activism borne out of a provoked spirit. And a belief that the world is fallen, but that it can be changed.

You see, on Mother's Day 2007, my pastor, Jerry Cisar, preached a remarkable sermon on the horrific practice of abortion. He does not usually preach topically, so this was a bit of an event in itself. He described the issue in clear terms and in ways which I became freshly convicted. The facts were not new, but the sense of needing to do something was definitely new.

Abortion is my problem. Even though I have never had one, or told anyone to have one, or voted for a pro-choice candidate, or really, to my knowledge, ever known anyone that has had one.

Abortion is your problem.

Abortion is our problem.

We have to do something.

It is not merely the left wing politicians or the liberal theologians to blame for this heartless and cruel act. 40 million babies have been murdered since 1973. Roe vs. Wade is close to being overturned. The partial birth abortion ban was upheld by the Supreme Court this spring. Medical science and technology are on our side in this fight. And fight we must.

I cannot control or dictate the actions of another, but I can do something myself.

My pastor's sermon awakened me out of a cynical slumber. God, through His Holy Spirit, showed me again, the heinousness of abortion, and my heart, now alive again, and sensitive to this issue, began to break.

My prayer is that this blog brings glory to the Lord Jesus Christ. Think about the evil of abortion. Pray for our leaders. Pray for the upcoming elections. Pray for those women who are seeking counsel and in need, even as you read this. Pray for the organizations that are seeking to stop abortion. Pray for those who adopt unwanted children and pray for sound biblical doctrine in our churches to revive this land.

And pray for your hearts to break.
